The shape of the crank and slider, as seen below, is able to change a rotational movement into a translation movement. A translation movement is the process of moving from one position to another, so that each point of the object moves the same distance, in the same direction, as every other point. This movement occurs without turning. Motors drive a large majority of mechanisms, and the crank and slider are often used to transform rotary motion into linear motion.
