What are redundant members?

‘Redundant member’ is the term given for any part of a structure that does not have to support a load.  The word member refers to any part of a structure.  Not all parts have to be removed, if they are not providing a structural function.  Often redundant members are kept on a structure because they look attractive.  Sometimes the use of these redundant members can allow the structure to be made even lighter, because they are adding extra strength and support.
