What are mechanisms?
Mechanisms are a combination of components that when put together form a
sub-system. Sub-systems are put together to form a machine. Machines are used to make work easier and to simplify work. Mechanisms are able to serve many
functions and we are surrounded by mechanisms everyday. If we did not have mechanisms or machines, our daily tasks would be very difficult and would also take a lot longer to complete.
Mechanisms are unable to operate on their own. Mechanisms require energy as well as someone to operate them, although many machines nowadays are computerized.
There are various types of energy that is used to drive mechanisms and mechanical systems. Examples of the types of energy used include mechanical,
chemical or electrical energy. The energy that is used by a machine is referred to as the input and the result of this energy is referred to as the output.
